Don't assume that other people know as much about your subject as you do. You're the experts and your staff need to remember that your customers will just use your products or need your service. They don't need to be mechanics in order to drive, or understand electronics to know that their camera isn't working. If you install air conditioning, repair computers, or take orders for mobile phones, then you will know more than your customers, but you'll need to remember that successful telephone answering means not using too much jargon, or be patronising.

No advice would be complete without mentioning that it's essential to be polite to all callers, no matter their age, social status, or reason for calling. It can be difficult to stay polite calm when you're dealing with someone rude or offensive, but the reputation of your company, depends on it.
