Britain Is The Place To Be For Expanding Businesses, But Why?

Earlier this month, BT published research that showed the UK is the most desirable location for business expansion in Europe. It’s also the second best place in the world, only surpassed by the US.

As surveys go, this one certainly didn’t lack in authority. The company asked 1,150 business decision makers in 13 regions across the planet where they felt would be the best place to grow their organisation. 30 per cent said the UK, while China (29 per cent), Hong Kong (27 per cent) and Germany (26 per cent) were also favourable destinations.

It’s not just small enterprises that are performing well in the UK. A separate study conducted by GE Capital showed that mid-sized businesses based in Britain are now growing at a faster rate than their counterparts in Germany, France and Italy.

The average British mid-market firm is predicted to increase its sales by 6.1 per cent in the next 12 months, which is substantially higher than Germany (4.8 per cent), Italy (3.8 per cent) and France (3.4 per cent). Tellingly, around 326,000 jobs will be created by mid-sized UK-based companies over the same period, which is more than double the amount set to be opened up by their German rivals.

John Cridland, Director-General of the Confederation of British Industry, believes the outlook is bright for our corporations.

“As the economic recovery continues to build momentum, UK mid-market firms are playing a key role in creating new jobs and markets, as well as competing on the international stage,” he remarked.
